Make Money Now, Even If You’re a Beginning Writer

Beginning writers often fail to sell their writing. When there are so many creative writers out there, why is it that so relatively few are published? Maybe they don’t have the self-confidence needed for publication? Or is it because they don’t know the rules of marketing?
It’s a thrill for every writer to see their first byline. Every writer should have that experience. Seeing your work in print is something that will never grow old. Call it a pride thing, if you will. Call it an ego trip. You might think it is a matter of being self-centered. Say what you want. Published writers call it slavery and reward, zest and zeal, salary and bonus.
So, what are the secrets to getting your articles published? Keep in mind that it isn’t that hard. Disciplining yourself to follow through is the hard part.
- Go to your local newspaper and ask for a reporting job. Local papers usually have an opening for a reporter that will cover such things as Chamber of Commerce events, School Board reports, and sports functions.
- Truthfully, it won’t make much difference if you don’t get the job. There is a back door to getting into the newspaper. Keep an eye out for accidents. Interview witnesses or people in the crowd while you’re waiting for the opportune time, and don’t forget to take pictures. (You will get $5 extra for each picture.) Ask one of the policemen which officer is in charge. Approach the officer with confidence and say, “I’d like to talk to you. I’m a stringer for ________ (name of newspaper)”. Ask if you can see him after the accident is cleared away. He will tell you how the accident happened and he will give you names, addresses, etc. Take it to the newspaper asap because it is time sensitive.
- Look for odd people or folks who have weird hobbies and interview them. Hand deliver the article to the editor of your local newspaper.
- Keep the money rolling by resubmitting articles with regional interest all over the United States. You can find a list of nationwide newspapers at the library. One article regularly resubmitted can net you hundreds of dollars!
The great thing about submitting news articles is that it doesn’t take much talent; beginners have a good shot at being published; and it is a great way to get your first published clippings. Newspapers pay on acceptance, too, so it is quick money. Get started today!
